“Open Source Software Solution for Managing Library Automation and Digital Libraries

Modern libraries have the collection of both print as well as electronic resources. The primary aim of modern libraries is to disseminate the information resources to its users who are in the need of such information. Due to huge explosion of information resources, it became necessary for libraries to automate their operations to meet the growing demand of users.
Before the origin of open source solutions, library automation was dominated by commercial library automation packages. There is abundant availability of such library solutions. Library authority has to choose one of them which serve their service needs, financial needs and user’s needs in an effective and efficient manner. In this critical situation, open source library solutions fulfills the financial need of libraries because libraries are facing the problems of severe budget cuts, increased demand for various library services and lack of adequate technical staff. Nowadays libraries are adopting open source solutions for the automation. Open Source solutions are providing benefit to libraries by reducing initial and ongoing costs and eliminating vendor lock-in. Koha is the most widely known open source integrated library automation package which is available in English, French, Chinese, Arabic & other several languages.
About the workshop
The purpose of the workshop is to develop the expertise by providing a thorough training and hands-on experience on integrated open source library management software-Koha. The Workshop will facilitate the interaction between experts and the participants in order to bridge the knowledge gaps and initiate capacity building activities the deliberation of the experts-and subsequent discussion-during and after the workshop will help in developing a road map for the automation of libraries through open source software.
Objectives
The objective of workshop-cum-training program is intended to :
• Give an in-dept understanding of Koha Software for the use of library automation.
• Conduct hands on experience for the installation and customization of Linux.
• Undertaking practical experience for the installation and customization of Koha on Linux environment.
• Provide hands on experience of functioning of various modules of Koha.
• Acquaint with live experience of updating and maintenance of Koha.
Resource persons
The experts in the field of library automation through open source software will be invited from institutes and universities from various parts of the country to deliver lectures and providing training to the participants.
Participants
The workshop will be of immense benefit to all those involved in developing and maintaining digital collections such as LIS faculty, librarians and information professionals, students research scholars etc. The maximum 35 participants will be accommodated on first come, first served basis.
Workshop Dates/Timing
The workshop will be conducted during the period 25 – 27 Feb. 2012 (tentative).
Accommodation
The participants will arrange their own accommodations in the city. A good variety of hotels and lodges at reasonable charges are available nearby the workshop venue. Guest houses of Local Self Government and Academy of Administration are also available at reasonable rates.
Registration fee
The registration fee for workshop is Rs.1000/-.The registration fees include workshop kits, copy of KOHA software, and other relevant materials. The fee is to be paid in advance by Demand Draft/Cash in favour of Dr Prabhat Pandey Head Department of Library and Information Science, Sarojni Naidu Govt. Girls PG Autonomous College, Bhopal (M.P.) along with the duly filled in nomination form. No refund will be allowed for the fee. The fee includes course material, working lunch.
Sarojini Naidu Govt. Girl Post Graduate College
Situated in a prominent location of south Bhopal and having a sprawling campus, Sarojini Naidu Government Girls' Post Graduate (Autonomous) College, Shivaji Nagar, Bhopal well known by Nutan College has a very special place among the colleges of Madhya Pradesh. True to its mission statement, the college has risen to even greater heights with a brilliant track record. With student strength of 300 at the time of its establishment 37 years ago, the college today imparts higher education to approximate 3000 girls. It is considered a matter of prestige to get admission in this college because of our outstanding standards of teaching, very high cut-off percentage in Science and Commerce streams, nearly cent percent result in all streams and the initiatives to make higher education more meaningful.
Sarojini Naidu Govt. Girls P.G. College has a well-equipped automated library situated on the ground floor of the building opposite the indoor Botanical Garden. It was started literally from scratch in July 1970. It can now be compared favorably with the libraries of its age group in the university. Aim of our library is not only to provide reading material related to curriculum but we want to provide all type of material to students, which is essential for their over all development. Central Library and 19 departmental libraries with collection of 60,000 books, 58 Journals and Bound Volumes and CD’s collectively support teaching & research programmes of the institute. All the students, faculty members and employees of the institute are entitled to make use of the Library with the barcoded membership card/Smart card. Internet facility and DELNET access is available.

Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, is a fascinating amalgam of scenic beauty, old historic city and modern urban planning. It is the 11th century city Bhojpal, founded by Raja Bhoj. It is also called as city of Lakes.The city was originally known as Bhojpal named after Bhoj and the dam ('pal') that he is said to have constructed to form the lakes surrounding BhopalThe Places of Interest within the city are Taj-ul-Masaji,Jama Masajid,Moti Masajid,Shaukat Mahal &Sadar Manzil,Manav Sangrahalaya,Upper Lake,Lower Lake,Van Vihar,Fish Aquarium,Regional Science Centre,Birla Mandir,Gufa Mandir Manuabhan ki Tekri etc. Around the Bhopal City other Visiting Places within 50 Kms are Sanchi, Bhimbethka, Bhojpur, Islam Nagar etc.
